Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)
It’s really easy to jump into this verse and tackle the part that talks about throwing off everything that hinders… That would be the easy place to start.
But let’s talk about ‘easy’ while we’re at it. How about the part that actually admits that the areas that hinder us… EASILY entangle us.
I have a simple question for you today… Why do you / me / we put ourselves in the situations that we frequently fail in??
We know what is a trap, or a noose, or a hazard to our life… yet we can ‘easily’ find ourselves falling right back into it again. It is something to avoid, or keep away from… and the sin that so ‘easily’ entangles us… is ‘not so easy’ to throw off.
That’s why we run with ‘perseverance’. Breaking habitual sin is not ‘easy’… it’s hard. It’s a conscious decision to NOT do what you so ‘easily’ wish to do… that by throwing off what ‘hinders us’ (does not benefit us… actually makes us worse off) we can begin to actually become better people and more like the people we actually know God would want us to be like.
At least that’s how I see it,
